First of all point out that you can set your profile to private so that it can only be viewed by people you approve. they send you a friend request and you can either approve or deny. Make sure you give your parents your password so they can moniter you. Lots of pervs out there. Im a perv too but not after children.

Another thing you can do is when you set up your myspace page dont give them your correct info. You can set up a page using a false name. I did. And any abuse or inapropriate stuff you or your parents see can be flagged and the myspace page of the offender will be deleted.

Without being their friend, you could try doing a search. You do a search for their profile name in Google. In most cases it should turn up a few pictures. But you still wont have access to all of them.

I believe if you are under 15 (or at least truthfully answer that you are), your MySpace profile is automatically made private and at any age you have option of making your profile private, which is good for divorced people such as myself.

Have a serious conversation with your parents. Explain to them they you understand the risks that are associated with any younger person using the Internet and promise to be responsible. Offering them your password is certainly a good gesture. If they resist, calmly remind them that you are committed to keeping yourself safe online.

I`m a parent and my daughter that has a myspace page. I agreed with this because it helps her keep in touch with her relatives and friends that we moved away from. Can`t hide the content sent or recieved and is in view for everyone to read. My daughter is 12 and I keep close tabs on her daily. You can always make your own profile and make her add you. That way, she can keep some privacy but you will still be able to see who is leaving her comments and what information she has posted on her page.

You can also get the password hint sent to the email address that the account is listed under. Do you have access to that email?

First off, if you profile is private, you don't need a tracker because noboby can access your myspace page unless they are on your friends list. If you are worried about someone on your friends list stalking you , then I'd say you have some really goofy friends then.

Trackers only work to a certain point. They CAN NOT tell you the "exact" name of the people that visit your profile unless that person is also using that tracker for their page. Trackers can tell you a where-a-bouts of where the person is located, what time they visited and how many times they visit. One traker I have used can also tell you the internet IP address as well as what internet service they are using (i.e. AOL, Roadrunner etc.). I have found 2 different trackers to be of somewhat use and have posted the websites below.

I recently took pictures of my fiance's daughter, and posted them on my private myspace page. He (her father) was present when I took them(he was even in some of them) and he later gave me written permission to post them. His ex (his daughter's mother) somehow viewed my private profile and private pictures (and some of my friends profiles too), and wrote me a nasty letter saying it was illegal for me to have them because I didn't have her permission. My fiance and his ex have joint legal custody of their daugther. She is now taking me to court claiming that I am the stalker and that she needs a restraining order to protect her self and her child from me. I just need to know if she has any ground to stand on and if I will still be allowed to see my fiance's little girl.

You took the photos so you in fact own the 'copyright'. So there is no way she can claim copyright infringement. It sounds as if she is claiming you can't post them without her permission. She is wrong. As long as you have permission from one parent then it's fine. Now since she's filed a complaint a judge may order you to remove the photos but you haven't done anything illegal because you did have a parents permission.

As for her claiming 'stalking'. Stalking only applies if you are harassing the child in someway which I doubt is the case. It is not illegal to look at someones page even if they do not want you to. It's not even illegal to follow someone and take pictures, even if they are a minor, AS LONG AS it is on public property, you are not saying anything to them, harassing them by phone, email, or other internet means, and have no ill motives towards them. (I know this because someone was stalking my sister online and we found there was little we could do since the person was only 'watching' and had not actually contacted her.)

It sounds like mom needs to get over Dad and the failure of that relationship and move on. There's nothing worse than an ex who will use a child to start drama.

Well, try and put yourself in the mom's place. If someone had pictures of YOUR child on their myspace page, and you wanted them down, and someone else refused, how you YOU feel? I am sure you'd be pretty upset. Regarldess of the mom's motivation, she is unhappy with it, and wants you to take them down. Why not just do it? Is it worth causing more hostility? Maybe your being kind enough to honor her request will show how mature you are and how willing you are to co-parent with her. Is this really worth fighting over? Put yourself in the mom's place, not in the "dad's girlfriend"'s role with the mom being the "enemy" because if you marry the dad, the ex is going to be a huge part of your life for a very long time. Why let this bitterness be the beginning? Use it instead to be a sign of your willingness to repsect her as the child's mom.

Personally it sounds as if this is more a case of sour grapes on the part of the mom against her ex's new relationship with you. I don't think you've done anything wrong from a legal standpoint at all.

However, I'm also very conservative when it comes to kid's pictures on MySpace. I coached my DD's basketball team a few years ago and have a picture of our team after we won the championship games. However, in deference to the fact that they are all minors, the only part of that photo that is on my page is me and my daughter.

A 20 year old friend of mine had a picture of herself drinking a beer in her profile (which was set to private). The police found a way to hack into it, then went to her father's place of work and told him about it. Is this legal? I've taken many criminology classes and it seems like unethical community police work. Any ideas?

myspace is a public place, and posting anything on there is viewable to the public. This means that you have evidence of illegal activity in plain view - thus making it something that can and will be used against you in a court of law. posting your pictures on-line, even if they are set to "Private", is still a community forum and is subject to local laws. I bet the cops just made a fake profile and was accepted as a friend to the people.

police do not employ hackers, its illegal. They do however, cruise my space pages and look for illegal activity that has been doccumented. Police may be given access to sites with a private designation by court order based upon probable cause of finding evidence of a criminal act. This is not given as a blanket authorization, it requires a case by case review. So I think there are a few facts about this situation that you are missing.

I doubt police are hacking, I've never known a police officer to be that intelligent. What they are probably doing is contacting myspace and asking for these pictures. They can do that legally. Seeing as how they obtained your friend's father's place of work, this is most definitely the case, unless your friend's profile mentioned who her father was and where he worked (I doubt it).

Myspace actually gives LE unlimited access to all accounts to look for criminal activity. It is in the EULA. It also gives all parents the right to look at their kids accounts also in EULA.

For starters, police don't know squat about hacking (they have to call in outside technicians just to fix and upgrade their desktop PCs much like the average joe). But I think it is stupid from the employer's perspective. If your daughter has a negative outcome (not getting hired, being disciplined, etc.) the employer is now presumed to know anything that was contained in any of those pages. I have a myspace account, as well as accounts at other "community" websites, but I do not mention my name or any other identifiable information. With millions of accounts, it would take a miracle or a lot of patience for someone to stumble across my picture.

I think it is a VERY good idea for anyone that uses public forums such as yahoo questions, myspace or whatever, to keep them separate from their real life.

As for the legality, you would have to check with a lawyer. If the employer viewed the public pages, then there is nothing illegal or unethical. If they were made to open them via password in which it sounds like they did, there may be reason for a lawsuit if that is the path you wish to take.

Myspace only only allows people over 14 to have a myspace. the only way that she will be able to have a myspace is to lie about her age.
